Tech Challenge Team Goes to Science Family Night at Oakwood- Windsor

On Jan.17, 2008 two area high school students, Brian Coleman and Devin Staack brought one of the Tech Challenge Robots to Family Science Night at Oakwood-Windsor Elementary School. The event started with guest speakers followed many different exhibits on science related topics to which the scientific method, the night's theme, could be applied.

Second Grade Teachers Mrs. Cecilia Wegge and Mrs. Charlotte Ferguson opened the evening by talking about the Scientific Method. They introduced the school's Teacher Advisor for Oakwood's Junior Lego League Team GLOW, Agnes Hobson. She explained how students can become Team members next year. With the help of student, Madison Proctor, they talked about the Power Puzzle project and what the team learned. They also shared their experience at the FIRST Lego Regional last Saturday in Aiken.

Stephanie Scott, Mentor for Schofield Middle Schools Lego Team and the M'Aiken Magic Robotics Team, talked about the Lego program. She showed families two of the Lego team's robots and demonstrated how they perform different tasks. Brian and Devin talked to the families about the Tech Challenge program. They demonstrated how the robot maneuvers, taking it through an obstacle course, and showed how the robot can pick up objects. Mentor Linda Haines demonstrated a Segway and told the families about Dean Kamen and all of the FIRST Programs. She also talked to the families about the importance of learning reading, math and science.

Parents were excited about how the Junior Lego League program leads into all the other FIRST programs. They were also interested in the fact that there are Scholarships available for high school students.

Thanks to All for M'Aiken Magic Happen at Family Science Night!

Lego League) teams to organize and run a regional competition. It received a good bit of news coverage.

This article is about FLL in our area
